The role you’ll contribute:

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Endoscopy RN practices as a professional nurse within the limits of the Georgia Nurse Practice Act assuming responsibility and accountability for the care given to patients in the Endoscopy Lab. Utilizes skills, knowledge and nursing process to ensure the quality of care provided and in harmony with the philosophy, goals and policies of the Nursing Department and hospital administration. Assist physician with all procedures in Endoscopy. Cleans equipment and orders supplies and equipment needed. Endoscopy:

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Provides for the safe delivery of care through assessment and identification and prioritization of pertinent problems and needs for the patient receiving an endoscopic/laser treatment.

  • Reviews chart for signed consent and physician’s orders before transporting patient to department.

  • Observes and assesses patient status before and after each procedure as evidenced by vital signs, heart rate monitor, and/or pulse oximeter documentation in Provation.

  • Recognizes significant changes in patient's condition taking appropriate action.

  • Follows proper body mechanics and provides for safety and security needs when transporting patients.

  • Accurately prepares and administers medications and IV fluids according to physician orders and hospital policy.

  • Demonstrates professional expertise and competence with endoscopic equipment when assisting the physician.

  • Maintain optimum privacy for patient.

  • Ensures that all equipment is functioning properly as evidenced by feedback.

  • Follows policies of infection control.

  • Identifies life threatening data, responding with immediate action according to protocol, to activate health care team and institute measures to turn condition around.

  • When applicable, follows hospital protocol and physician orders regarding use of restraints.

  • Reports safety concerns to Nursing Manager or Director of Surgical Services.

  • Maintains the cost effectiveness of the department to control the cost of delivery progressive, quality patient care.

  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies.

  • Completes documentation in Provation and Cerner and submits patient charges within 24 hours of completed procedure.

  • Establish priorities by utilizing time wisely and demonstrating organizational ability.

  • Demonstrates standard of GI Lab practice and supports goals and policies.

  • Complies with department policies and procedures.

  • Completes special projects, duties, and Performance Improvement when requested.

  • Associate remains flexible to changing systems, is expected to demonstrated quality and effectiveness in work habits and treat staff, physicians, patients and families with consideration and respect.

  • Understands the Computerized Physician Order entry process and proficiently uses the electronic medical record for retrieval of patient information.

  • Understands computer downtime procedures.

  • Monitors Electronic Medical Record for new physician orders and diagnostic results.

  • Performs all duties relating to Real Time Scanning accurately and efficiently.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

  • Administers Moderate sedation and documents according to policy.

  • Demonstrate ability to maintain scope in place while physician is obtaining specimens.

  • Ability to perform waived testing (point-of-care testing) per Clinical Laboratory’s and the patient care unit’s policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring and can identify dysrhythmias.

  • Ability to handle instrumentation and assist the surgeon as needed.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Computer skills required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

  • 2 years nursing experience

  • 12 months Endoscopy experience or prior experience in ICU or procedural areas i.e. operating room, catheterization lab, etc.

  • SGNA certification within 3 years of hire date

  • ASN degree

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Certified Endoscopy Nurse

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

  • Currently licensed to practice as an RN in the state of Georgia or in a qualifying compact State

  • ACLS

  • BLS
