You Will Be Responsible For:

  • Maintains 24-hour accountability for meeting Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center’s Standards of Care.
  • Makes patient rounds as necessary to assess and problem solve, met and unmet patient needs and staff achievements.
  • Assures individualized Interdisciplinary Care Plans are provided for each patient as per policy.  Plans are collaboratively developed with each patient and their families and documented per policy.
  • Assures that documentation by staff is in accordance with quality and legal standards.
  • Assures documentation reflects the care given to patients.
  • Assures documentation reflects on-going assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation of care and treatment.
  • Assures documentation is factual, accurate, and timely.
  • Enforces all charting policies and procedures.
  • Assigns or delegates informal random daily audits, as well as, formal audits of documentation with action plans implemented to rectify deficiencies.
  • Plans for safe, efficient, therapeutic, and compassionate nursing.
  • Demonstrates competency in all procedures within Scope of Practice, as appropriate to the ages of the patients served (pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).
  • Assures patient care assignments are made on each shift according to patient acuity and personnel skill level.
  • Assures JCAHO, Florida Department of Health, Florida Nurse Practice Act, Patient bill of Rights, and Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center Standards of Care are met or exceeded.
  • Assures Infection Control and other related standards are met.
  • Functions within budgetary constraints.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and sound staffing management and knowledge.  Works in coordination with the Critical Care and Med/Surg Nurse Managers to achieve departmental staff goals for the Critical Care and Med/Surg Units of oversight.
  • Develops schedule within budgetary limitations and post at least one week prior to work date.
  • Identifies and implements creative staffing to meet patient needs in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Collaborates with peers in the distribution of personnel for the Nursing Department.
  • Makes rounds to assess the nursing skill mix assignment in relation to the patient acuity and care needs.
  • Documents staffing needs, allocation and variances.
  • Conducts interviews for employment, promotions and transfers.
  • Participates on Search Committee when requested.
  • Makes decisions on employment and is able to support them.
  • Documents, processes and completed Human Resources Department forms correctly and thoroughly.
  • Performs annual employee appraisals.
  • Keeps an ongoing objective record to support the appraisals.
  • Evaluates objectively, staff against standards of care, individual goals, feedback from patients, peers, supervisors, physicians, and other health team members as appropriate.
  • Ensures that staff clearly understands expectations by periodically reviewing them.
  • Identifies failure to achieve throughout the year and conducts counseling sessions prior to the appraisal due date.  Reviews all corrective action plans done by Nurse Manager.
  • Completes evaluation in a timely manner through individual performance appraisals.  Reviews evaluations completed by Nurse Manager.
  • Coaches/counsels/disciplines employees when appropriate, professionally, objectively, and in a timely manner.
  • Identifies problems, complaints, and failure to comply with policies and procedures.
  • Documents coaching/counseling sessions with staff in objective terms.
  • Maintains anecdotal notes on staff.
  • Meets with Human Resources to review documentation and recommend action as needed.
  • Solicits employee input and assists the employee through the problem solving process with goal oriented outcomes within five working days of an incident.
  • Conducts follow-up sessions with the employee to review progress and provide assistance as needed
  • Promotes the professional growth and development of the staff.
  • Provides the opportunity through experiences, education, and positive feedback to gain new knowledge and skills.
  • Provide staff with the opportunity to assume responsibilities commensurate with their experience and ability.
  • Contributes to developing a sense of cohesiveness among the staff and Management Team.

  • Communicates information effectively, both verbally and in writing, in a timely, clear and concise manner.
  • Correctly identifies or seeks guidance in identifying sensitive or confidential information,
  • Records minutes from meetings with staff and forwards to Vice President when appropriate.  Makes available for all staff to read.
  • Maintains communications log of pertinent memos and minutes and encourages staff to read and initial daily as appropriate.
  • Meets with the Vice President of Nursing and communicates information about staff achievements, problems and concerns.
  • Reports information to Administration about patients, families/significant others, hospital staff, physicians, departments, committees, and the hospital that may have a significant impact on the Nursing Department and/or hospital.
  • Guest Relations:  Functions as patient representative in monitoring, reviewing and resolving patient and physician concerns.  Responds to concerns and suggestions.  Consults with Risk Manager when necessary.
  • Director of Inpatient Services maintains ongoing direct communication with members of the medical staff to meet the ever-changing needs of the physicians.  Maintains an environment in which the quality of patient care delivered meets the requirements of the physicians and consistently exceeds the standard of care.  Responds promptly to all physicians concerns for the purpose of evaluation when necessary on Med/Surg and Critical Care units, with assistance of Med/Surg and Critical Care Nurse Managers.
  • Community Relations:  Assist with plans, coordinates and implements community relation’s activities by extending nursing services to the public in order to promote a positive hospital image.
  • Represents the philosophy of nursing and Nursing Administration at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center. Ensures that the Sacred Work concept is present in the actions of the staff on the units.
  • Represents professionally the Nursing Department on various hospital and medical staff committees.
  • Meets daily with Manager, Supervisors and nursing staff, patients, families/significant others, and physicians to identify problems, problem solver, and provide support.
  • Prepares, analyzes, and reviews operational and capital budgets for assigned units.
  • Plans for budget process by collecting historical data, identifying trends and anticipating impact of new programs.
  • Collaborates with the Vice President of Nursing to develop capital, operating and staffing budgets for assigned unit(s).
  • Analyzes and interprets budget variances, explains or justifies them and develops/implements action plans to reduce unfavorable variances.
  • Evaluates budget variance information and obtains staff participation in identifying and implementing strategies to improve productivity.
  • Verified accuracy of monthly budget reports.
  • Prepares and discusses with Vice President of Nursing proposals for personnel, financial or material resources.
  • Acts to assure cost containment.
  • Ensures that staff participates in identifying and implementing methods to decrease the misuse, abuse or over utilization of supplies.
  • Ensures that charges are submitted for all expensed supplies used.
  • Uses monthly reports to identify areas of lost revenue and implements action plans to reduce losses.
  • Promotes effective liaison relationships between nursing staff and other health team members.
  • Actively participates in and promotes quality assurance activities.
  • Assigns or delegates informal random daily audits, as well as, formal audits of documentation with action plans implemented to rectify deficiencies.
  • Promotes staff understanding, support and participation in Quality Assurance activities.
  • Promotes and participates in projects that are developed, reviewed with the Executive Director of Nursing, complemented and documented in a timely manner.
  • Supports a holistic approach in providing patient care.
  • Assures that there is evidence of all patient resources being incorporated in the plan of care, i.e., pastoral care, home care, social work, PT, etc.
  • Participates in clinical teaching activities.
  • Meet with and observes the individual nursing staff member’s level of clinical and professional expertise.
  • Provides experiential teaching and offers pertinent resource material.
  • Plans, directs, and implements the unit and clinical orientation of new nursing staff.
  • Works with Clinical Educator to ensure that staff development needs are met on all shifts.
  • Shares new clinical information with staff on a timely basis.
  • Ensures self and staff attendance at mandatory and other appropriate In-service Programs.
  • Serves as a professional role model in problem solving and decision-making
  • Conducts patient care rounds, acting as a role model for communications and direct care delivery.
  • Establishes an effective learning environment for students.
  • Collaborates with faculty and nursing students to coordinate and facilitate learning experiences
  • Encourages staff participation with student nurse conferences, and other activities.
  • Assures active and effective student/staff communication.
  • Maintains staff accountability and responsibility for care standards being met for patient co-assigned to students.


What You Will Need:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree is the minimum requirement
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a leadership role in Nursing Unit setting (e.g. Manager / Director). 
  • Current FL Registered Nurse License required.
  • Basic Life Support certification required.


Job Summary:

The Director is responsible and accountable for planning, organizing, coordinating, and evaluating the management and clinical practice activities for the Inpatient Nursing Units.  The Critical Care and Med/Surg Nurse Managers report to the Director of Inpatient Services.  The Director assumes 24-hour accountability by setting measurable goals and objectives so that optimum quality patient care is delivered and staffs are developed to exert that care in a sensitive and caring manner
