The role you’ll contribute:

Under the direction of the Department Leadership, the safety specialist is responsible for developing, coordinating, training and providing technical consultation associated with environmental safety matters that include fire safety, ergonomics, chemical safety and biohazard control. The safety specialist works with internal and external stakeholders to provide a safe environment and to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.

  • Assists in the implementation, management and monitoring of safety programs, including policies and procedures that meet regulatory requirements.

  • Assists in the evaluation of the medical center’s procedures, facilities and equipment by conducting frequent inspections to identify unsafe conditions and to implement safeguards and solutions

  • Participates in daily/ weekly safety rounds throughout the medical center

  • Identifies training needs/deficiencies, identifying priorities for training of departments and programs. Designs and delivers the appropriate programs through in-person and/or on-line training systems to educate medical center employees/physicians in environmental safety programs. Maintains training records as needed.

  • Contributes to the ongoing continuous improvement of the environmental safety program

  • Assists with developing, implementing, monitoring, and managing the safety program(s), policies, and procedures.

  • Researches and recommends safety equipment. Maintains safety and accident records, as needed.

  • Assists department leadership in identifying employee injury causation trends, and mitigation options for reducing injury frequency and severity

  • Prepares and delivers recommendations to department leaders, safety committee representatives, and other medical center associates/leaders.

  • Performs administrative duties associated with the specific duties of the safety specialist position

  • Remains current on new technology, methodology and equipment

  • Participates in the Hospital Incident Command System structure during emerging events

  • In collaboration with the department leadership, participates in the medical center’s hazard surveillance program and develops summary/reports.

  • Works with department leadership to develop and maintain data for the chemical inventory software

  • Develops monthly environmental safety newsletters and other communication modalities

Qualifications

The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:

  • Applicable NFPA, OSHA, TJC, CMS, EPA, and other applicable Federal, State and local rules and regulations relating to environmental safety

  • Safety an Environmental hazard identification methods

Skills in:

  • Developing, implementing training programs

  • Preparing and maintaining records and electronic files (i.e. – Interim Life Safety Measures, Pre- Construction Risk Analysis, Life Safety Risk Analysis etc)

  • Public speaking and training to diverse audience

  • Preparing reports and dashboard metrics

  • Communicating and analyzing complex and detailed reports and information

  • Handling multiple priorities simultaneously

  • Computer technology used for communication, data gathering and reporting

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Tools: Excel, Word and PowerPoint

Ability to:

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED :

  • High school diploma/GED with 2 years of experience, or Associate's degree, or Bachelor's degree required
