You Will Be Responsible For:


· Assumes authority of unit operations for his/her assigned shift by facilitating staff assignments based on experience and competency considering continuity of care

· Planning patient flow for the day; directing admits, transfers and discharges

· Reprioritizing and redirecting resources in the moment as situations mandate.

· Maintaining comprehensive oversight of unit, knowing overall unit capability

· Being overall decision-maker for unit through course of shift

Acts as resource to the unit by:

· Maintaining and imparting knowledge of unit and hospital policies, procedures, and protocols

· Supports and acts as a resource for current and new direct care staff

· Providing assistance to staff when acuity rises, or unexpected events occur through independent judgment, appropriate decisions, and organizational ability with appropriate priority setting.

Serves as role model to unit by:

· Maintaining own competencies and skills to ensure ability to perform all essential duties and responsibilities of staff

· Giving staff timely feedback and coaching; participates in real time problem solving and barrier removal for staff; diffuses conflicts between staff, shifts, and departments; act as preceptor for new charge nurse staff; identify areas for improvement, sets own personal development goals.

Oversees quality of unit in conjunction with manager by:

· Help maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.

· Participating in the implementation and evaluation of educational programs and quality monitoring activities.

· Ensuring that staff adhere to standards of practice, service responsibilities and guidelines

· Interprets policies and procedures developed by higher-level managers or supervisors.

· Assists in developing, recommending, and coordinating implementation of new procedures for the assigned functions or unit.

· Providing managers with information regarding staff/unit performance issues.

· Providing peer review in staff performance for yearly evaluations.

· Participating in interviewing for future employees.

· Assisting in analysis of problems, issues, events, and errors

· Skill in exercising initiative, judgment, and decision-making in solving problems and meeting the objectives of the unit

· Assists with the implementation of the creation action plans to support improvement. Supports unit Christian Service, diversity and satisfaction plans. Involves staff in achieving unit goals

· Shares performance data with staff. Supports the customer, physician, and employee satisfaction activities of the organization

· Performs investigation into accidents, critical incidents, and complaints of patients, visitors, doctors, and staff. Reports important information to the NM or Supervisor in a timely manner

· Participates in practice changes as a result of performance improvement activities and evidence-based practice initiatives. Accurate documents and monitors activities as needed. Refuses to participate in unethical procedures.


What Will You Need:


  • Minimum one year of professional acute care nursing experience

  • Broad nursing knowledge; management ability; ability to accept responsibility, exercise authority and function independently.

  • Ability to lead a team in providing excellence in patient care.

Education and Experience Preferred :

  • Current valid State of Florida or multi state license as a Registered Nurse

  • Skills in Basic Life Support (BLS Certification) and PALS or ACLS certification, when it is an assigned unit requirement.

  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) training is required within 30 days of employment (Only for employees in cost centers: 8100 Behavioral Care Unit, 8400 Behavioral Geriatric Unit, 50100 Emergency Department)

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Preferred :

  • National certification in nursing clinical specialty

Job Summary:

The Charge Nurse has direct shift responsibility for the quality and continuity of patient care for specific age groups identified by the standards of care. Under the direction of the Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) or Nurse Manager (NM), coordinates and assists with all levels of nursing care delivered to patients on the inpatient department. Through the manager’s delegation, the Charge Nurse has the authority and responsibility to: facilitate the provision of care during a specific shift; improve quality of patient care; augment patient satisfaction; enhance recruitment and retention; monitor and maintain cost-effectiveness. The Charge Nurse is a role model and resource person guiding staff in the development of skills and capabilities. Exercise independent judgment in establishing priorities and assignments, review work, and resolve problems associated with care of patient during shift. Exercise independent judgment grounded in the knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice sufficient to be able to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
