Orlando seeks to hire a Lab Assistant II who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.
Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,107-bed Florida Hospital Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. Florida Hospital Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. We are already one of the busiest hospitals in the nation, providing service excellence to more than 32,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients each year.
Florida Hospital Laboratories (FHL) provides hospital-based laboratory services throughout the community for Florida Hospital. The FHL outreach program, provides a needed link in the healthcare continuum, by offering hospital quality laboratory services to patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers. FHL provides clinical support through our sales and marketing staff, a 24/7 Client Services Department, courier transportation services, off-site phlebotomy services, a dedicated laboratory financial services team, and an information systems support staff.
2:45am - 9:15am; Monday – Friday
The Off-site Phlebotomist performs venous and capillary blood specimen collection from nursing home and other outreach patient locations, as directed by FHL assignments and supported by physician orders. The position requires the exercise of judgment under general supervision. Work customarily involves practical knowledge of various clinical laboratory procedures, and may include clerical and other laboratory support functions as needed. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. Adheres to the Florida Hospital Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state and federal agencies and accrediting bodies.
Knowledge, Skills, Education, & Experience Required:
Completion of a Blood Collection Program, Medical Assistant Program, or similar training program appropriate to anticipated specialty department and 1 year experience in phlebotomy, OR
3 years experience in clinical laboratory setting appropriate to specialty department work assigned.
Technical skills and aptitudes related to specimen collection from all age groups.
Ability to read text and numbers in English, with demonstrated ability to comprehend, measure, reason, match and problem solve.
Ability to learn and apply computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices.
Mature judgment and the ability to handle confidential information within Florida Hospital guidelines and applicable regulations.
Ability to handle infectious biological specimens, caustics, toxic chemicals and/or irritants appropriately and safely.
Ability to communicate verbally and in written form with persons of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective and professional manner.
Ability to respond appropriately to buzzers, bells, flashing lights, and pagers.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:
Valid Florida “Class E” driver’s license and driving record in accordance with Florida Hospital policy
Nationally certified in blood collection (Preferred)

Performs assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing which includes blood specimen collection, answering the telephone, and occasional clerical and receptionist duties.
Performs post-analytical activities related to laboratory testing as needed to support department.
Performs various support activities to facilitate operation of laboratory to meet client’s needs, including maintenance of inventory, and appropriate specimen delivery.
Participates in, and has knowledge of, laboratory and hospital Performance Improvement activities, including evaluation of new equipment and/or procedures or methods.
Provides resolution to customer service issues within guidelines; provides support education to clinical staff.
Adheres strictly to Florida Hospital Compliance Plan and the rules and regulations of applicable regulatory authorities; protects confidentiality of patient information and results at all times.
Provides and acts on technical and support information related to the elements of laboratory testing for all age groups, from neo-nates through geriatric patients.
Appropriately utilizes PPE, and follows safety policies, including handwashing. Understands and adheres to Chemical Hygiene plan.
Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department or area.
Employee job duties may include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area. Employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
